Sauna and Cold Plunge Layout Guide

Layout, bench geometry, water and materials for a sauna and cold plunge that actually gets used through a Northeast winter.

The single detail that decides whether a sauna and cold plunge get used in February is the distance between them. Everything else — cedar species, bench height, heater brand — is secondary to that walk. If the cold plunge is across a yard, through a door, down a hallway, the routine dies by the second week of real cold. If it's twelve feet away under one roof, it survives.

The transition sequence

A sauna and plunge aren't two separate rooms that happen to share a building. They're one sequence: change, heat, cold, rinse, dress. The layout question is really a question about that sequence — how many steps it takes, how many doors it crosses, and whether a person will do it wearing a towel in January without thinking twice.

A three-zone layout

In a 20 ft module the honest way to organize this is three zones in a straight run: dry/change, heat, cold/rinse. Each zone does one job. The dry zone holds clothes, towels and a bench that never gets wet. The heat zone is the sauna proper. The cold/rinse zone holds the plunge, a shower or rinse point, and floor drainage. Water stays contained to one end of the module; the dry end stays dry.

The glass wall between change and heat zones does two jobs: it lets heat stay where it belongs, and it lets natural light into a space that would otherwise be windowless. It also means the person changing can see straight through to the deck, which matters more than it sounds like — a sauna with no sightline out feels like a closet.

Bench geometry in a narrow module

A 20 ft high-cube module finishes out to roughly 7'8" of interior width. That number sets almost every other decision in the heat zone. A two-tier bench run along one long wall leaves the opposite wall for the heater and a walking aisle of around 3 ft, which is the minimum for two people to pass without stepping on each other's towels.

  • Lower bench depth: roughly 20"–24", enough to sit with legs extended or to lie down with knees bent.
  • Upper bench depth: roughly 16"–20", set back slightly from the lower bench so headroom above it isn't compromised by the ceiling curve near the module's edge.
  • Headroom above the upper bench: this is the number people forget. In an 8'6"–8'10" interior height, sitting upright on an upper bench near the ceiling can feel tight. Most layouts drop the upper bench a few inches to keep real headroom rather than maximizing bench height for its own sake.
  • Bench length: the 7'8" width limits a single run to about two adults sitting or one lying flat. A longer sauna needs the extra length of a 20 ft module used lengthwise, not a wider module — width is fixed by the steel structure.

Door swing, glass and privacy

A sauna door should swing outward. It's a life-safety convention, not a design preference — nobody should have to push against a door to get out of a hot room. Glass doors and glass partition walls are common because they read as premium, but glass has a sightline cost: place the module and its windows so the heat zone isn't visible from a neighbor's deck or a public path. This is a siting decision, not a curtain decision.

Water and drainage realities

A cold plunge and a rinse shower both need supply and drain lines run to the module, same as any wet fixture. The drain has to go somewhere — a connection to the existing septic or sewer line, or a dedicated dry well, depending on the property. Filtration and circulation equipment for a plunge is exactly that: equipment, sized to the tub, serviced like a pool or spa system. None of this is exotic, but all of it has to be planned before the module is set, because retrofitting drain lines under a placed structure is a bad day.

Ventilation matters as much as drainage. A wet room without airflow holds moisture in wood, hardware and insulation long after use. A vent path — passive or mechanical — keeps the heat zone from becoming a humidity problem between sessions.

Materials: the wet/dry threshold

Cedar shows up on sauna benches and interior cladding because it's stable, light, and doesn't hold heat against skin the way denser hardwoods do — practical properties, not aesthetic ones, though it looks the part too. The dry/change zone can run in a different, harder-wearing material because it never gets wet. The floor transition between zones — where dry flooring meets a wet, drained surface — should be a deliberate material change, not a gradient. A tile or composite decking surface with a slope to drain in the cold/rinse zone, and a dry, warm-underfoot surface in the change zone, is the honest split.

Heater siting: electric vs wood-fired

These are two different siting problems, not just two flavors of the same box.

  • Electric heaters need dedicated electrical service run to the module — a capacity and circuit question for an electrician, not a temperature-rating claim we'll make here.
  • Wood-fired heaters need a chimney penetration through the roof, real clearance to combustible surfaces, and a plan for ash handling and fuel storage. That's a bigger siting commitment on a small module footprint.

The heater type isn't a style choice. It's a decision about what runs to the module — a wire or a chimney — and that decision happens at the site plan stage, not after delivery.

What a RECOVER 20 actually fits

A RECOVER 20 comfortably fits a sauna with two-tier bench seating, a change zone, and a shower or rinse point. Add a cold plunge inside the same module and something gives — usually change zone storage, or bench length drops from a two-person run to a single-person bench with a lie-down option. Push the plunge outdoors onto a deck and the interior stays generous. This is the real tradeoff in a 20 ft footprint: heat, cold and dry storage are all competing for the same 7'8" x 19'4" box, and a good layout is really a decision about which one gets shortchanged.
