20-Foot vs 40-Foot Home Gym: An Honest Comparison

Two module lengths, two very different training realities. Here is what each one actually fits.

Every conversation about a private training space eventually comes down to one number: length. Homebase builds two standard training modules — TRAIN 20 and TRAIN 40 — and the difference between them is not just "more room." It's the difference between a space built around one activity and a space built around two happening at the same time.

The real numbers

Both modules are built on standard high-cube steel structures roughly 8 ft wide on the outside. After framing, insulation, and interior finish, usable width settles around 7'8". Length is where they diverge.

What a 20 genuinely fits

A TRAIN 20 fits one serious activity well, or two light activities in compromise. It does not comfortably fit two serious activities. That's not a marketing caveat — it's arithmetic. A half rack with a 4x6 platform already consumes roughly a third of the floor. Add a bench, a dumbbell rack, and a walking lane, and you've used most of what's left.

  • A dedicated strength setup: rack, platform, bench, and a modest dumbbell run
  • A strength-lite plus cardio hybrid: half rack and bench along one wall, a treadmill or bike along the other
  • A conditioning-only room: rower, bike, mat space, no rack at all

What it does not fit well is a full rack, a functional trainer, and a piece of cardio equipment all at once. People try. The result is a room where nothing has clearance and every session involves moving something out of the way of something else.

The barbell problem

A standard Olympic bar is 7 ft, 2,200mm, end to end. In a room that's roughly 7'8" wide after finish, that bar leaves under six inches of clearance if you try to orient it across the width. Nobody does. Every rack in a Homebase training module is oriented so the bar runs along the length of the room, not across it. This single fact drives almost every layout decision that follows — it's why racks sit at one end facing down the room's long axis rather than along a side wall.

Ceiling and overhead movement

At roughly 8'6"–8'10" finished, overhead pressing and jump rope both clear for most users, but tall lifters or anyone using a barbell overhead with plates on the sleeve should measure their own reach before assuming clearance. This is true in both the 20 and 40 — module height doesn't change with length.

How many people, honestly

A 20 works for one person training, or two people who are comfortable sharing a rack in a superset rotation. It does not work for two people doing unrelated things — one on a bike, one racking heavy squats — without one of them waiting or working around the other's space.

What a 40 adds

TRAIN 40 roughly doubles the floor without doubling the width. That extra length is what lets a rack and platform zone exist at one end while an open floor, turf lane, or second cardio station exists at the other — simultaneously, without folding or moving anything between them.

Doors, glass, and how they change the room

In a 20, a single end-door or a run of glass on one wall eats into the only usable perimeter you have — placement decisions ripple through the whole layout. In a 40, the extra length gives door and glass placement room to breathe: an entry at one end doesn't compromise the training zone at the other. This is a real advantage of length that has nothing to do with equipment count.

What you give up in a 20

  • Simultaneous strength and conditioning zones
  • A dedicated open floor for mobility, turf, or plyo work
  • Comfortable two-person independent training
  • Slack in the layout — a 20 is usually planned close to full

A 20 is a room built around a decision. A 40 is a room built around a schedule.

Who should buy which

If you train alone, know your primary mode (strength or conditioning), and don't need two zones running at once, a 20 is the honest answer — it's the lower-cost tier and it will do one thing well. If your household includes more than one serious trainee, or you genuinely alternate strength days and conditioning days and don't want to reconfigure the room each time, the 40 removes that friction.

The case for a 20 plus a RECOVER 20 instead of one 40

There's a third option worth naming honestly: a TRAIN 20 paired with a RECOVER 20 as two separate structures — or connected as THE HOMEBASE COMPOUND — instead of a single TRAIN 40. The total footprint is similar. The difference is function. A 40 gives you more training floor. A 20-plus-20 gives you a training room and a fully separate recovery room with its own door, its own climate, and no equipment noise or chalk dust anywhere near it. If recovery space (sauna, cold plunge, shower) matters as much to you as training volume, splitting the length across two purpose-built rooms is often the better use of the same money than one longer training-only room.
